“You Might be a Culture Poacher if..”

When I found this I was pretty sure it was directed at me, as I was the main subject of her twitter feed at this time. However, it took a long time to figure out what she meant. Sure, I am white-ish in the sense I’m a dark olive mix of Spanish, poor Irish Catholic, and Native American roots. I’m a mutt. An olive toned one, but ok. I guess I’m a “white girl” – I’m glad she feels free to designate my race for me.

Hip Hop lyrics on my wall? I checked my Facebook wall. Huh, no hip-hop lyrics. Then it occurred to me. Years before, back in an era where typography as wall art was socially acceptable, I’d framed lyrics to a Tribe Called Quest song. Tribe was arguably at the forefront of alternative “conscious” hip-hop, I’d grown up listening to their music and it will always hold a special place in my heart.

Here is what was on my wall. Fresh out of 2017.

“You on Point Tip?” “All the Time Phife”

I’ve had friends of every color all of my life so I wont sit here and discuss the “no black friends” because wow, who even says that? Talk about tokenism. If she knew more of my “black friends” it would be ok I listened to hip-hop? If not, I’m a “culture poacher?”

OK, go on.
